treatment journey
planning

There’s a lot that goes into the bluebird bio gene therapy treatment process. Your Patient Navigator is here to help as you explore if gene therapy is an option for you. We will collaborate with you and your care team, answering questions along the way.

While we provide an overview of what the treatment process may look like, it's essential to work with your care team at a Qualified Treatment Center (QTC) —a specialized hospital trained to administer bluebird bio gene therapies—to establish your own treatment journey.

There are 3 main phases in this process: consultation, apheresis (cell collection), and treatment.

consultation

consultation

The first step is to request a consultation with the QTC if you are not already being seen at one. Prior to your appointment, the doctors may request medical records and any tests needed for evaluation. Throughout the day of your appointment, the care team will review your medical history, assess your overall health, and answer your questions. Together you will decide if gene therapy may be an option for you. We can help connect you with a QTC to schedule this appointment.

Please note: QTCs are independent of bluebird bio and decide whom they will evaluate and treat based on various clinical and non-clinical factors such as patient age, insurance coverage and capacity for new patients.

apheresis (cell collection)

apheresis (cell collection)

bluebird bio gene therapies are made using your own blood stem cells, so the next step is collecting the stem cells through a process called apheresis. You’ll be given a medication that will help move the cells into your blood stream. Next, a machine will separate them from the rest of your blood. The stem cells then are sent to a manufacturing site where they are used to make the bluebird bio gene therapy.

treatment

treatment

Once the bluebird bio gene therapy is made and your body is ready for treatment, you will receive an intravenous (IV) infusion of the gene therapy at the QTC. After gene therapy treatment, you will need to stay in the QTC for several weeks to monitor your recovery. Your care team will determine when you have recovered and are well enough to return home.

After treatment, you will work with your QTC care team and your regular care team to establish a long term follow up plan and monitoring.
